university of babylon  جامعة بابل Babylon Ancient Town Situation:Babylon is situated about south of Baghdad, and 10 km north of Hilla town. It is located near several ancient towns like Kish, Borsippa, Kpthy and Kifil. The name of Babylon is derived from the Babylon word " babil" or " bab-ilam" as is mentioned in the Sumerian tablets which mean "god s gate". The Sumerian form refers to the same meaning. The town was known as an important religious place. It was also called " Tin-tir-ki" which means the aim of life, " sinan-ki" which means heaven s arm, and " E-ki", the town of canals, and " Nun-ki Arido"which refers to an ancient Sumerian town. The Greek called it Babilion which is similar to Babylon. The name Babylon continued up to this date and is the most famous name in ancient and modern world. Baby;on became the title of ancient civilization of Iraq and Iraq is attributed to it as a whole. The Walls: Babylon walls surrounded the city. There were two walls , an interior and exterior. The exterior wall was built of mud and 7 meters in wide. The interior wall was built of bricks and 6:50 meters wide with regular towers. There were Six main gates on the east side,and three gates at the west. The Main Palace: The main palace is out of the city center King Nebuchad nezzar built it in 15 days, The German mission calls this name at it, There is no complete excavation for this palace up to this date. Lion of Babylon :This statue was found in the 17th century in the ruins of the northen palace of King Nebuchad nezzar as a symbol of his conquests and has become an icons symbol of Babylon. Ishtar Gate: This gate is considered the most famous monument in Babylon. it had two large towers. This gate was carried to Berlin and now it is in Berkamon museum. The Greek Theater: The Greek Theater is to the east of the Babylonian city center, near the interior wall. This theater belongs to the era of Alexander the great. He built this theater.
